1998 British Touring Car Championship season
The 1998 Auto Trader RAC British Touring Car Championship was a prominent BTCC season during the 'golden era' of touring car racing in Britain. It was eventually won by Rickard Rydell in a Volvo S40 with a round to spare. The runner-up was Anthony Reid in a Nissan Primera. The Michelin Cup for Independents, a championship for privateer entries was won by Tommy Rustad in a Renault Laguna. The video game TOCA 2 Touring Cars is based on this championship season.
== Rule changes ==
* There would now be 2 different types of race, a sprint race and a feature race, with the latter involving a compulsory pit stop.
* Qualifying for the sprint race used a single timed lap system. Drivers would have only one attempt to set a timed lap, and would be alone on the track. Qualifying for the feature race was a normal qualifying session.
* Four wheel drive was outlawed.
